4chan

4chan is an anonymous imageboard that has been running since October 2003. Founded by Christopher Poole, known as moot; it was the first major English-speaking imageboard, and has had a significant impact on both internet culture and IRL. Since its inception, it has been known for providing many LOLs, controversies, and shitty threads.
Due to a constant influx/outflux of users and occasional changes in moderation practices, 4chan's culture completely changes roughly every 3 years. Frequent user dissatisfaction has lead to many spinoffs and alternatives being created, which usually begin life with a small exodus of 4chan users, but they usually die after a short while. Heyuri is not one of these, since it was created completely independently of 4chan.
Stuff that happened
4chan vs. World2ch
If you want to read more about it, it's here: World2ch: 4chan Drama
World2ch, to summarize, was an early multi-language imageboard founded in 2003, right 7 months before 4chan was first made. It's commonly forgotten, however when 4chan was first made, it had a decently significant controversy between it, world2ch, and Something Awful, sparked thanks to a combination of a thread on SA where people just... forgot it existed before 4chan, pre-existing hatred for moot not acknowledging world2ch, and a need to repopulate the dying population of world2ch.
Regardless, at the end of it, moot came in to cuss out most of the people there for them declaring war, not telling him, and spewing hate behind his back. It didn't really end in anything memorable, but moot did make a news post about it. I don't know if Something Awful even had anything about World2ch aside from that thread.
Hiroyuki buys 4chan
moot sold the site to Hiroyuki Nishimura, owner of 2chan, the inspiration for 4chan, atleast in theory. There's apparently reason to believe that ownership has been split amongst multiple entities, each of which contributing to the sale. I don't know, I'm too lazy to read the article.
Regardless, "gook moot" took over and is still the site's admin to this day.
4chan Hacked
A vulnerability in their PDF thumbnailer they didnt update since 2014 let some guy break into their server. Everything got leaked, and their 4/f/ board, the one with loads of history, got deleted to try mitigate future hax. Some packed up to Heyuri (that's us) and others elsewhere. I think they just stopped allowing pdf uploads too, so I wish my fellow /po/ lovers the best in finding a new place to call home.
Hoaxes
4chan has made alot of hoaxes. There has been so much random shit people make up there that gets regurgitated out by the less wiser, and it ends up making the news every now and again. It's like an internet version of a skill check. This isn't an exhaustive list, it's just a compilation of some that were pretty funny. Atleast to me...
Hideo Kojima was the Shinzo Abe assassin
July 8th 2022, Shinzo Abe is shot. The killer isn't public yet, so a random guy on 4chan's Politically Incorrect (/pol)board posts this image[1], accusing the guy that made Death Stranding for being a far left extremist, with the name of Samyuero Hydeo.
Of course, somehow, multiple media outlets picked it up as fact, such as the French far right politician Damien Rieu and TV stations in Greece and Iran. Kojima found out, threatened to sue, and they had to say sorry. I need to play Sons of Liberty.
Apple Wave Charging
Faux info pieces for the fake "Apple Wave" feature introduced with iOS 8 was made sometime in 2014, if i remember correctly. You could charge your phone in the Microwave! This was big enough to be covered in daytime news, because so many people had shoved their iPhones into the microwave and blew them up; enough so to warrant responses from places like the Los Angeles Police Department.
