A tripcode is a hashed password created through tons of 1337 hacking in order to create a pile of crap, or a tripcode. They are used in the name field.
A tripcode looks a little something like this:
name#password = name!12345abcd
They're often used by namefags in order to secure their identity, but this practice is generally frowned upon on most anonymous bulletin boards outside of very specific situations where user verification is vital (such as posts made by site staff members, or by those who are contributing something of value across multiple posts/threads). Note that this is not always the case; on some sites—particularly smaller close-knit boards—tripcodes are encouraged or are even the norm (this also applies to Japanese bulletin boards—weeaboos rejoice!)
Tripcode usage on Heyuri
On Heyuri, casual tripcode usage is widely accepted by all but the n00best of n00bs, but the overall prevalence of tripfags has noticeably decreased since the end of the so-called "golden age of Heyuri".
Secure Tripcodes
Secure tripcodes are tripcodes created with two passwords.
It looks like this.
name#pass1#pass2 = name!555556shit
Secure tripcodes differ from site to site, and as such, one tripcode you enter on one imageboard will not be the same you get on another, hence the security.
