4chan is an anonymous imageboard that has been running since October 2003. It was the first major English-speaking imageboard, and has had a significant impact on both internet culture and IRL. Since its inception, it has been known for providing many LOLs, controversies, and shitty threads.

Due to a constant influx/outflux of users and occasional changes in moderation practices, 4chan's culture completely changes roughly every 3 years. Frequent user dissatisfaction has lead to many spinoffs and alternatives being created, which usually begin life with a small exodus of 4chan users, but they usually die after a short while. Heyuri is not one of these, since it was created completely independently of 4chan.
