Web chats are web-based chat rooms; they are distinct from IRC, instant messaging, etc. since they are used over HTTP in a standard web browser - as opposed to some other protocol or client. Their heyday was the mid-to-late 1990s, prior to the dot-com bubble. WebChat Broadcasting System is an example from the West (here's a screenshot from this 1994-95 article), and the ゆいちゃっと script (and other similar scripts like COMCHAT which Heyuri uses) are examples from Japan. --Anonwaha (talk) 03:12, 6 February 2025 (UTC)

Yui Chat

- It's called Yui Chat - the developer's name is Yui, and it's a chat script. They made several other scripts around 1996-1997, such as Yui Board, Yui Post, Yui Note (ancestor of what we have on https://up.heyuri.net/), and Yui Vote (ancestor of what we're using on https://cgi.heyuri.net/vote2/). There were several different iterations of their website hosted in various places, including mirrors hosted by others. Examples:

- Didnt know i-mode was that open. Yui chat doesnt mention any sorta i-mode functionality under their feature set page, and shinos chat has their footer stated as Yu I-mode, so im a bit confused to if it's a seperate script. from exploring the na006 site, i-mode seemed to never have any mention on there either... only non-frame browsers? is it just umbrella terms?

- The i-mode compatible version was released in celebration of Yui Chat's 4th anniversary here: https://web.archive.org/web/20000620172607/http://www.ibport.co.jp/~yui/cgiwork/imode/imode.html
- As it says on the page, it works in tandem with Yui Chat 2000, so mobile users could use the i-mode interface while PC users use the regular interface. This practice was fairly common on the Japanese web in the 2000s; at least until phones that could display proper websites became more prevalent --Anonwaha (talk) 22:39, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
